We love learning about the back story, rewards and challenges with what goes with producing new books. We’re delighted to have a chat with international award-winning author, Michelle Worthington about her latest releases in The Willing Kids Program; The Wind and the Mouse and The Mouse and the Egg! Thanks, Michelle! 🙂

Congratulations on your beautiful series in The Willing Kids Program, with the latest two releases, The Wind and the Mouse, and The Mouse and the Egg! The books cater in particular to children with sensory and/or learning difficulties with the incorporation of important life skills and values.

What has been the most rewarding part of the process?

I’ve loved working with Jennifer from Daisy Lane Publishing and developing a relationship with her to create more books!

What are your main objectives in offering these stories as books and video recordings?

Many children don’t have access to physical books, so I wanted to make sure they were no barriers to them accessing the story.

In what ways can parents and educators utilise these books and draw on their messages for children?

Many teachers and librarians are using animation and videos in the classroom as part of down time. These books fit with curriculum and can initiate conversation and learning extension via the animation and the books.

How did you come to collaborate with illustrator Adyna Ferre? What do you love about her work?

I first met her (Adyna’s) husband who runs DLF animation and I loved her illustration style. It is very sensory friendly for children on the autism spectrum.

Do you have a particular favourite book or part of one of the books that you love the most?

I love the farmer’s underpants as a flag on the pirate ship.

Have you planned to create more stories in your gorgeous ‘Mouse’ series? What secrets can you reveal?!

The next book in the series features a ballerina, and I can’t wait to get dressed up for the book launch!

We can’t wait for the launch, either! Thanks so much for answering our questions, Michelle! 😊
