#Bookreview:

The Christmas Door, Penny Macoun (author), Paul Nash (illus.), Penny Macoun, October 2022.

Blurb:

A rumble from behind brought us out of our trance

As the open oak door quivered and danced,

And through the floor

Came a giant red sack

That whooshed past me and collapsed.

The reindeer did not flinch,

They knew what was happening,

The giant sack sat waiting…

Review:

What could be better than a mystery Christmas surprise?! That’s exactly what we have with the mystery that is The Christmas Door! What could possibly be waiting beyond the door in the floor? Let’s find out…

Inspired by the classic, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, Penny Macoun has penned an enchanting Christmas poem with a few twists and turns just like a sweet candy cane. A twinkling, merry introduction brings us into the scene, followed with our mystery object; adding to the wonderment that has already gripped our attention.

‘It appeared out of nowhere,’

The door in the floor

Wasn’t there before,

But now lay in our living room,

The old oak door,

Was hard to ignore.

For only the magic of a child’s touch can reveal the dazzle from within, as an outpouring of large reindeer now grace the girl and her father in their bright, warm home. But to their surprise, there’s more! A red-suited fellow with the most special gift of all – a magic spell; that is, the gift of a smile, a hug, a loved one’s embrace, or an act of kindness – these are the most important presents that magically bring joy to everyone at Christmas time.

Penny Macoun’s lilting rhyme and near-rhyme carries this beautiful sentiment of love and togetherness, all the while delivering a sack full of fun and magic at the same time. Paul Nash brings much light and joy to the illustrations, with a mix of warming tones and bright colours in a soft, fluid and textured watercolour-look technique. The expressions on his loveable Santa are especially cheerful, not to mention his big pop of red!

The Christmas Door is an enchanting picture book for early years children, wrapped up in a large bow of hearts and surprise. With themes of family, kindness and love, this book will open your heart to the joys that lay in wait this festive season. As you sit down to read this book, don’t forget to snuggle your loved ones tight – it’s the best Christmas present of all!
