Baby Band, Diane Jackson Hill (author), Giuseppe Poli (illus.), New Frontier Publishing, 2017.

With a lively, orchestral celebration of clangs, squeaks, stomps and Cha-Cha-chas, here is a joyous book that is set to get your hearts racing, feet pacing, and instruments hooting and hustling in your own little world. Baby Band is a harmonious arrangement of a musical transformation from solidarity to togetherness.

Upon careful observation of the illustrations we see that despite the people in the apartment block lacking a sense of community, they all have something in common – the arts. Whether it be a picture of dancers, trophies for the performing arts, or large instruments in their grasp, they all seem to enjoy sound. But not the sound of the new baby crying. That is, until the baby makes music of his own with pots and pans, and all the residents decide to ‘band’ together and join in the fun.

Hill’s passion for music emanates through her words, and also through her escalating narrative just like a verse leading up to the chorus. Poli’s loose line and bleeding watercolours resonate with movement and energy to match the flamboyant nature of the story. He has certainly captured the transition between the characters’ separateness and their joining together with his clever use of space. There are also transitions from spectacularly busy and vibrant page spreads to those with more white areas, beautifully reflecting both the high noise level and the necessary pauses, intensifying its dramatic, song-like effect.

Baby Band is delightfully entertaining and engaging for preschoolers with the essences of diversity and community spirit; facilitating a positive message of inclusion and embracing the simple pleasures in life. Go make some noise!
