WHO

Who wrote, illustrated and published this book?

Pip Harry wrote the text, cover and inside illustrations by Sophie Beer. Published by UQP.

WHAT

What is it called and what is it about?

The Little Wave is a middle grade verse novel about three very different kids whose lives connect when a city school from Manly plans to bring a country class from Mullin to visit the beach. Together, Noah, Lottie and Jack discover the power of friendship, courage and being true to yourself.

WHEN

When is its release / launch date?

The Little Wave was released in Australia and NZ on 7 May, 2019.

WHERE

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

The creative spark for The Little Wave came after I’d been for a swim at the beach in Sydney. A group of visiting rural schoolchildren ran down to the sand, excited to experience the ocean – some for the very first time! I wondered how a coastal trip might send a ripple into the lives of country kids, and their hosts in the city.

WHY

Why is this book meaningful to you and why would its message resonate with readers?

As a former surf lifesaver and avid open water swimmer, the ocean has always been my happy place. It was very special to write a book set in a coastal location I hold dear to my heart – Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The Little Wave has strong messages of friendship, kindness, acceptance, and the value of new experiences, which I think will resonate with young readers.

HOW

How have you promoted this book and how can we find it?

My publisher and I have worked together to promote this book by contacting media and influencers, securing reviews and interviews and ensuring good visibility on social media and online platforms. The book is available at all good book stores and online. For more information you can click here or visit my website at www.pipharry.com.

I’ve often thought how marvellous the first seaside experience would be for country children. I think it would be fun to explore it in a story. Congratulations on doing so, Pip.
